Only recently have they become interested in using it in medicine.

“The point is,” says Dr. Nicholas Jakubovics of Newcastle’s School of Dental Sciences, “plaque on teeth is a thin biofilm made up of cariogenic microbes and bacteria, their waste products and carbohydrates from food. The microbes in this film are quite tightly bound to each other. They gradually fill the free space around the teeth and gums, forming a kind of protective barrier. This barrier protects them from toothbrushes, toothpaste, mouthwashes and, believe it or not, even antibiotics.”

While observing the marine bacterium Bacillus Licheniformis, scientists at Newcastle University led by Professor Grant Burgess discovered that when it moves, Bacillus Licheniformis releases a special enzyme that completely breaks down the biofilm along with the harmful bacteria.

Professor Burgess noted: “This is a remarkable phenomenon: the marine enzyme can destroy caries-causing microbes anywhere, including hard-to-reach places. What’s more, the enzyme can prevent plaque from forming in the first place, and that is very important.”

“When we started studying the capabilities of the marine bacterium, we were focused on ships. We very soon realized that the enzyme of the marine bacterium Bacillus Licheniformis could be used on a much wider scale. If we add it to toothpaste, we could prevent plaque from forming and stop caries and gum disease from developing. In surgery, the enzyme could be used when placing implants such as artificial hip joints and voice prostheses.” – said the professor.

The British scientists’ next step will be clinical trials of the unique enzyme and organizing production of the new product.

The “Nino Beridze Orthodontic Center” dental clinic is always looking for what’s new.
