But how do we protect our children’s delicate teeth from caries? Here are some simple rules that will help keep your child’s teeth healthy.

Rule 1. Breastfeed your little one for as long as possible.

Dental plaque is the most insidious enemy of enamel. This is where bacteria multiply, and the acids they produce cause caries.

Good cleaning isn’t the only protection against plaque. Breast milk contains the protein lactoferrin, as well as the enzymes lactoperoxidase and glucose oxidase. These substances not only have an antimicrobial effect, but also break down plaque.

Rule 2. Clean your little one’s mouth after every meal

One of the main causes of caries is bacteria. After every meal, they get an extra boost and become active. If brushing isn’t possible, use a special cleansing foam, a mouthwash or a wipe. If even that isn’t possible, rinse with plain water.

Rule 3. Remember: sugar is the biggest enemy of enamel

Limit sugary drinks and foods. Never give products with sugar or honey before bedtime. Foods high in carbohydrates weaken enamel and cause caries.

Rule 4. Help your little one brush their teeth properly and, if necessary, brush hard-to-reach areas yourself after each time they brush on their own.

Teach them the basic brushing movements: horizontal, vertical, circular and vertical “sweeping” movements.

Rule 5. Wait between eating and brushing

Tooth enamel becomes more sensitive after fruit, fruit juices and fizzy drinks. So wait 30 minutes after eating before brushing.

Rule 6. Plan the first visit to the dentist when your child turns 1.

At this age, the doctor can already assess your little one’s bite and teeth. The doctor will also help you choose a toothpaste and, if necessary, coat the enamel with a protective fluoride varnish.

Rule 7. Choose a toothpaste for your little one that quickly and effectively restores damaged enamel and protects against caries.

Choose toothpastes made especially for children. Read the instructions carefully.

Rule 8. Toothpastes should be not only effective, but also safe for a child’s body.

Learn 8 simple rules for protecting children’s teeth from caries.
