That’s why, as soon as the first tooth erupts, we should start caring for its prevention and teach the child the basics of oral hygiene.

How to choose a children’s toothpaste

Visually, it’s very easy to tell children’s toothpaste from adults’. It has attractive, brightly colored packaging. Children’s toothpastes taste nice, which in some cases helps avoid the gag reflex. Some toothpastes even come with toys. All this is done to get the child interested in brushing and make it more fun and enjoyable.

How do you make the right choice? First of all, remember that adult toothpastes and pastes meant for the whole family are not suitable for children under 14. Although they contain the same ingredients, their concentration may be dangerous for a child’s body.

Toothpaste from 0 to 4 years

Toothpaste for little ones should clean teeth gently but thoroughly. So its abrasiveness (RDA) should not exceed 20 units. Children’s toothpaste must be safe, because children don’t yet know how to rinse their mouths properly and about 30% of the paste is simply swallowed. The fluoride concentration in the toothpaste should not exceed 200 ppm, or it should contain none at all.

Toothpaste from 4 to 8 years

Given that children at this age have both baby and permanent teeth, the toothpaste should be designed for both. Ideally, it should reduce the risk of caries and also ease the discomfort associated with teeth changing. Abrasiveness should not exceed RDA 50 – brushing should be gentle and must not injure the enamel. Fluoride content should be no more than 500 ppm.

Toothpaste from 8 to 14 years

At this age, children mostly have permanent teeth, so the composition is close to adult toothpaste, with a fluoride content of 1400 ppm and an abrasiveness of 50 units.

Once we’ve sorted out the ages, we move on to the most important thing – carefully reading the ingredients.

As we’ve learned, children’s toothpaste should clean teeth gently and thoroughly. So we pay attention to which abrasive it contains. The most common abrasives are calcium carbonate and sodium bicarbonate – simply put, chalk and baking soda. These substances are very aggressive and may damage the enamel of both baby and permanent teeth. Preference should be given to toothpastes containing titanium dioxide or silicon dioxide. Unfortunately, not all manufacturers state the abrasiveness.

With or without fluoride?

As a rule, fluoride toothpastes are recommended for children living in regions where drinking water is low in fluoride. Even so, doctors’ opinions on this are divided. The thing is, this element is very toxic and may even be dangerous to health. Young children often swallow toothpaste. As a result, fluoride enters the digestive tract, and the risk of fluorosis, thyroid hypofunction and other diseases increases. So the fluoride content in toothpastes should not exceed permitted levels, and it’s better if there is none at all. It’s best to check this with your doctor.

Antibacterial substances

The main antibacterial substances used in toothpastes are triclosan, metronidazole and chlorhexidine. The thing is, they kill not only harmful but also good bacteria, disrupting the oral microflora. Such toothpaste should only be used strictly under a doctor’s supervision and prescription. If the child doesn’t have gingivitis, periodontitis, stomatitis, etc., we choose a toothpaste without antibacterial additives.

Foaming agents

The main purpose of foaming agents is to wet the tooth surface, create foam and spread the paste evenly, which makes cleaning easier overall. The best-known foaming agent added to various hygiene products is sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS, E 487). Unfortunately, it does more harm than good. This substance has a toxic effect, dries out the oral mucosa, and can also cause severe allergic reactions and other negative effects. An alternative may be sodium laureth sulfate, which is less irritating. Overall, foam as such doesn’t have a big effect on cleaning, so it’s better to choose children’s toothpastes without sodium lauryl sulfate.

Binders

Every toothpaste contains binders or thickeners. They can be natural or synthetic. Natural binders include various pectins – resins obtained from seaweed, trees and plants. Chemically derived thickeners made from cellulose, acrylic acid, etc. may be toxic to the body.

Preservatives

Preservatives are added to toothpastes to prevent microbes from growing during transport and storage. Here we check the ingredients for sodium benzoate, which in higher doses is a strong carcinogen and is banned in a number of countries. Propylene glycol (PEG), better known as an antifreeze agent, is quite harmful. Also avoid toothpastes containing propylparaben.

Learn how to choose the best children’s toothpaste for your child’s age.
