Self-ligating braces

In self-ligating (non-ligating) braces, the archwire is fixed not by ligatures (colored or colorless rubber bands), as in conventional braces, but by special locks on the braces themselves. This is very important, because in standard braces, the ligature is held quite tightly to fix the archwire and in many cases blocks the archwire.

During teeth straightening, the archwire must expend a considerable amount of force and time to move through the braces. In self-ligating braces, the archwire is not locked, allowing the teeth to move more quickly, using weaker, physiological forces.

The clinical outcome of this method is great:

  • The overall duration of treatment is reduced.
  • The need for tooth extraction is minimized.
  • The number of doctor visits has decreased
  • This saves time for both the doctor and the patient.
  • Wearing braces is more comfortable.
