Periodontology

Periodontology is the field of dentistry that covers the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the gums and the tissues around the tooth. The stability of a tooth depends on the health of these tissues, so their damage also affects the attractiveness of the smile.

The periodontists of NB Dental - Nino Beridze's Clinic assess the condition of the gums, make a diagnosis and choose the appropriate treatment method for each patient. All necessary procedures are carried out in one clinic, almost painlessly.

When should you see a periodontist?

A consultation with a dentist is essential if you notice at least one of the signs listed below:

Bleeding when brushing

Your gums bleed when you brush your teeth or floss.

Swelling and redness

Your gums are swollen and red, or hurt when touched.

Receding gums

The gum has receded and the tooth visually looks longer than usual.

Increased sensitivity

A tooth has become overly sensitive to cold or hot food and drinks.

Bad breath

Bad breath bothers you even after brushing your teeth.

Periodontology is not limited to treating problems that have already appeared, so a periodic visit is also needed when nothing bothers you. A scheduled check-up is especially important for smokers, pregnant women, people with diabetes and those who wear braces.

A consultation with a dentist is painless and does not take much time. The periodontist will check your gums and tell you whether you need additional care or treatment.

What does periodontal treatment at NB Dental - Nino Beridze's Clinic include?

The periodontist chooses the treatment method after assessing the condition of the gums, because some patients only need professional cleaning, while others need deep cleaning, gum correction or periodontitis treatment.

Professional cleaning

Plaque that accumulates on the teeth hardens over time and turns into so-called tartar, which an ordinary toothbrush can no longer remove. During professional cleaning, the dentist removes plaque and tartar with a special device and then polishes the tooth surface. Often this procedure alone is enough for mild gum inflammation to pass.

Deep cleaning (scaling and root planing)

In complex cases, plaque also accumulates below the gum, on the surface of the tooth root. In such cases the periodontist removes the plaque and tartar that have built up under the gum and treats the root surface so that the gum reattaches tightly to the tooth. This procedure also cleans the areas that cannot be cleaned with a toothbrush or ordinary professional cleaning. It is performed under local anaesthesia, so it is not painful at all.

Gum correction

There are cases where the gum covers a large part of the tooth surface, and sometimes the opposite - it recedes. During correction, the dentist removes excess tissue or restores the receded gum. As a result, the smile becomes more attractive and the tooth is reliably protected.

Periodontitis treatment

When inflammation spreads from the gum to the tissues around the tooth, periodontitis develops. Treatment is planned according to the severity of the disease and the condition of the tissues. Sometimes it involves several stages, and surgical intervention may be needed in addition to deep cleaning.

How does periodontal treatment proceed?

At NB Dental - Nino Beridze's Clinic, periodontology involves four main stages of treatment:

  1. Consultation and diagnostics

At the first visit, the periodontist checks the gums with a special instrument and assesses how tightly the gum is attached to the tooth. If necessary, the dentist will also recommend an X-ray, because the image will show whether the bone around the tooth is damaged.

  2. Drawing up a treatment plan

After diagnostics, the periodontist draws up a treatment plan and tells you in advance which procedures you will need, in what order they will be carried out and how many visits will be required. You can ask questions at any stage of treatment, because it is important to our team that you are fully informed.

  3. Treatment

The procedures are carried out according to the plan agreed in advance. During deep cleaning or surgical intervention, the periodontist uses local anaesthesia, so you will practically feel no pain. During treatment, the periodontist will also teach you how to care for your gums at home.

  4. Maintaining the result

To maintain the result of treatment, the gums need daily care. Your personal dentist will select a toothbrush and additional hygiene products for you, tell you how to use them and agree the date of your next scheduled consultation with you.

Frequently asked questions

Is gum treatment painful?

Professional cleaning is usually painless. During deep cleaning and surgical intervention, the periodontist uses local anaesthesia, so you will not feel pain. After treatment the gums may be sensitive for a few days, but this is temporary and passes quickly.

Does bleeding gums always indicate a complication?

No, sometimes bleeding is caused by brushing too hard or using a new toothbrush. If the bleeding recurs often, a visit to a periodontist is needed, because it may be a sign of gum inflammation.

Is periodontitis always accompanied by pain?

No, periodontitis sometimes develops without pain, unnoticed. Bleeding gums, receding gums, gaps appearing between the teeth or a loose tooth may indicate periodontitis.

Can periodontitis be stopped?

Yes, modern periodontology uses various treatment methods to stop periodontitis and keep it under control. Lost bone tissue cannot always be fully restored, but treatment protects the remaining tissues from further damage.

How many visits are needed?

The number of visits depends on the condition of the mouth and gums. In some cases one professional cleaning is enough, while deep cleaning may be carried out over several visits. The doctor will tell you how many visits you will need after the first consultation and diagnostics.

How much does periodontal treatment cost?

The cost of treatment depends on the complexity of the problem and the procedures required. The periodontist will tell you the exact price after examining your mouth.
